As such, it's appropriate enough the the actual film harkens back to the spirit of the original 1960s Star Trek TV series - with a narrative that takes place part-way through the Enterprise's famous five year exploratory mission - at the same time that it features an antagonist asking the question that's all the more relevant now that the franchise is turning 50: do Star Trek's ideals still matter now? Obviously, Beyond is going to answer that question with some variation of "Yes," but it's how Pegg, Jung, and Lin go about answering that question that's important and will determine the quality of the film.

All the while, the rest of the Enterprise's crew find themselves scattered apart, in mortal danger, and being actively pursued (or, in some cases, captured) by Krall's forces. Kirk's character thread is also highlighted in the movie's final trailer, as the captain (from his escape pod) bids farewell to his beloved Enterprise after it's destroyed by Krall's swarms of spaceships. In terms of structure, the third and final Star Trek Beyond trailer lies somewhere between the film's action-driven initial teaser trailer (also set to a pop song, in that case, the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage") and its second trailer - the preview that focuses on Kirk's personal journey to forge his own legacy apart from his father's (Chris Hemsworth, shown here by way of footage from the 2009 Star Trek reboot). However, even as Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew struggle to figure out the next step on their journey, their mission is interrupted by Krall (Idris Elba): an alien who is devoted in his anti-Federation beliefs and unleashes destruction upon the Enterprise, separating and stranding its crew on an unknown world where they can only rely on their wits - and one another - to make it out alive. Star Trek Beyond, as written by Simon Pegg (who reprises as Scotty in the film) and Doug Jung, catches up with the Enterprise crew a couple years into their Federation-backed five year mission to explore new worlds. The new trailer also includes excerpts from "Sledgehammer", Rihanna's new single that will be included as part of the official Star Trek Beyond soundtrack.

Hence, it's fitting that the final trailer for the movie - the third installment in the rebooted Star Trek film continuity as well as the first directed by Justin Lin ( Fast & Furious) - has now dropped online, teasing more action and drama from the U.S.S. Paramount Pictures will release Star Trek Beyond in theaters in just under a month, from the time of writing this.
